The use of the number seven in the Bible is perhaps very interesting and occurs in ways you are likely unaware of.  Discussed here is just some of the uses of the number seven in the Old Testament, everyday life, and the New Testament. You can probably think of many more.  This is a very quick read that I hope you will find some of it a bit interesting. As you will see, if you do not already know, the number Seven connects from the beginning of Genesis to the Glory of Jesus.

The Use of Seven in the Old Testament

For nearly 6,000 years, the number seven as used in the Old and New Testament has been used as a sign of completeness.

As a Holy number in the Old Testament, it is used over 500 times.
Perhaps to see a great example of how seven is used is to look especially in the 1st Verse of Genesis:

Genesis 1:1  See how the number Seven shows up over and over.

1The number of Hebrew words = 7
2The number of letters equals 28 (7x4 = 28)
3The first 3 Hebrew words translated
"In the beginning God created" have 14 letters (7x2 = 14)
4The last four Hebrew words
"the heavens and the earth" have 14 letters (7x2 = 14)
5The fourth and fifth words have 7 letters
6The sixth and seventh words have 7 letters
7The three key words: God, heaven and earth have 14 letters (7x2 = 14)
8The number of letters in the four remaining words is also 14 (7x2 = 14)
9The shortest word in the verse is the middle word with 7 letters
10The Hebrew numeric value of the first, middle and last letters is 133 (7x19 = 133)
11The Hebrew numeric value of first and last letters of all seven words is 1393 (7x199 = 1393)

This is beautifully presented visually on youtube:

This is but a one verse example of the use of seven in the Old Testament.

I love this verse because of what it explains.  It presents without explanation the origin of the universe.  It presupposes God (and therefore Jesus) before all things- "In the beginning God..." .  Just think- God created time!  Before God created- God was, before anything- God was, and even before time- God was.  And so was Jesus.  And THEN! Out of nothing, Jesus/God created everything and rested on the seventh day.

Seven- In Nature and the World Around Us

Now, see how seven is found in nature and the world around us.

Did you know:

In almost all animals the incubation or pregnancy period is divisible by seven. Seven is often referred to as "God's seal" or the number of spiritual perfection.

At some time in the year or over several years there are seven objects in our solar system clearly and distinctly visible to the naked eye-
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, and our moon.

There are seven colors in a rainbow.  When I get to heaven, I hope I can remember to ask God why He put Seven Colors in a rainbow.  But, I doubt if I will care then.

Interesting Facts:

Have you every wondered why our phone numbers are seven digits-
As it turns out, it is the largest number that is most easy to remember,  seven things, seven words, seven numbers.

I wonder why it was settled in ancient times that there were seven wonders of the world.  Since seven things are easy to remember, I guess people kept forgetting them.  Maybe there were "Ten Wonders of the World" but people could not remember all of them. So, 'Seven wonders of the World" won out, because people could easily remember them.

I wonder why the number seven is considered lucky.  Actually, seven is lucky in throwing dice.  With two dies, number 1,2,3,...,6, there are more ways, six, to throw a seven then any other possible number. You have 1/6th of a chance to throw a seven.  It is not really luck, just a higher probability.

I wonder why Walt Disney settled on Seven Dwarfs; again, maybe there were eight but he a hard time remembering the name of the eighth one.  So, he had to settle on seven.

It is interesting that there are only Seven continents and only seven named seas.

Why did Ian Fleming (James Bond writer) decide on Agent 007 rather than Agent 009, is seven more, say sexy?  Did you know that Ian Fleming was a top spy/information analyst during WWII.  He had close connections with England's Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill.

Seven days make a week.
I have heard that "Not praying for seven days makes one weak."

Why are there exactly Seven notes on a musical scale.

Seven Stars Make up the Big Dipper that points to True North. With my sextant aboard a C-130, I navigated and guided my plane all over the world depending on this star.  It never failed me.

Why is there only Seven Deadly Sins, surely people could think of more than seven.
The Seven Deadly Sins?

Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individuals recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.
Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.
Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.
Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.
Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.
Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.
Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

The Use of Seven in The New Testament

The Gospel of Matthew

After 16 verses of Jesus' genealogy in Matthew Chapter 1 we read in verse 17:
So all the generations from Abraham to David are
fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

This is most obvious-  14= 7 / 2 .

There are seven parables in Matthew.

Gospel Of John

Seven Elements of Jesus- Chapter 1
"
John systematically builds a clear and compelling case for the nature and character of Jesus in the first chapter of the gospel of John.
  • The Word is the source of life (John 1:4).
  • The Word is the source of salvation (John 1:12).
  • The Word is the Son of God sent by the Father (John 1:14).

There were  Seven Signs
also called Miracles by Jesus presented in John:

The seven signs of Jesus are:

[Miracle #1] {John 2:1-12}
       Turning wedding water into wine

       Healing the Nobleman's Son

[Miracle #7] {John 11:1-45}
Resurrection of Lazarus from death to life

There are Seven "I am" metaphorical statements of Jesus Christ in the Gospel of John:
  1. "I am the bread of life.John 6:35, 41, 48-51
  2. "I am the light of the world." John 8:12, 9:5
  3. "I am the door of the sheep.John 10:7, 9
  4. "I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.John 10:11, 14
  5. "I am the resurrection, and the life.John 11:25
  6. "I am the way, the truth, and the life." John 14:6
  7. "I am the true vine.John 15:1, 5

    Finally

    John 14:6 KJV

Jesus saith unto him, " I am the way , the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

Now, What does most of this seven stuff really have to do with anything about Jesus and His mission.  In reality, my guess, it is all on how you look at it and respond to it.

It is interesting, especially the sevens found in Genesis 1:1 and the material about Jesus.  But at our end of days, what is really important is not what we know about the use of seven in the Bible or everyday life.

What really matters is your response to Jesus.

    How do you respond to:
1-  Jesus and God Created you and Loves you.
2-  Jesus and God wants a relationship with you.
3-  Jesus came to Earth to show you how to live.
4-  Jesus suffered in much the same ways as we do.
5-  Jesus was obedient to God's will.
6-  Jesus died on a cross to save you from your sins.
7-  Jesus laid in a tomb for parts of three days.
8-  Jesus was raised from the dead by God to verify and make Holy everything Jesus said and everything Jesus did as God's will for our lives.

Your life and how you accept, believe, and live your life based on the eight items listed is but a blip on the scale of the time as we live into eternity.

Do you really Know Jesus, or
do you just know about Jesus?

Accept and Truly Believe in Jesus
    as your Savior

    and you will be Saved*.

    It is just that simple.
Anything else in life, it is at best just interesting.

    The Reality is this:
Our Completeness is not found in the number seven.

     Our Completeness
     is found only in Jesus.

    Thanks Be To God

    *Romans 10:9 KJV

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved .

    Romans 5
1Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

    Romans 3
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested , being witnessed by the law and the prophets;  22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe : for there is no difference:  23  For all have sinned , and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

    Romans 4
5  But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
