 John 11:25 NRS
Jesus said to her,
"I am the resurrection and the life.
Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, ..."

Even when there is grave danger to oneself, when given a righteous mission for goals beyond themselves, ordinary people become quite extraordinary.   There are many stories from times of war where even selfish people were extraordinary in their unselfishness for their comrades.  In our war on selfishness, one Glorious man's selflessness stands out.

A movie released some time ago described a time of near total nuclear destruction and lawlessness in the US.  Nearly all copies of the Bible have been destroyed, but people remember its Power.

In this movie, "The Book of Eli", Denzel Washington's character, Eli, finds a book, a book in a language he cannot read, but  feels the necessity, an inward push, the call, to take this book out West, someplace, to shape a new society.

In faith, he courageously follows his feelings not really knowing his destination or even why he should do this mission, but he felt an inner demand to complete the mission.  He had faith, he felt 'called', even in not knowing the why; but trusted his inner demand.  He just knows he will know when he has found a home for "the book".

He has to violently protect the Book and he has to kill many and all his enemies who get in the way, people he does not know.  He had no desire to kill  but all the time knowing he could die because of his mission and his strange faith.  He, Eli, was faithful to his mission and not always understanding why.  In the possibility of dying he found reason to live in his mission.

This reminds me of my attitude Vietnam.  Before I went, I had decided I might die for my country, and that was important, even if I died.  There, I found something much greater to die for(*1), it wasn't Vietnam.

I think I have come to know and understand a few people as Eli.  The most notable?  I had a student in class a few years ago, when in class another student said something about God, this student very emphatically said,"I do not believe in God!".  He was, in his mind (14 years old) was absolutely sure there is no God!  Later, unfortunately for that moment, it came to my mind, "I wish I had the 'certainty' of his faith."  As we read the Bible and Pray, Faith-our relationship with God, grows in us.  I now have come to the opinion I do have a greater faith than that student.  That student believes and has faith in only himself, while I believe in a Risen Lord and  a God THAT WILL NOT FAIL.   The Risen Christ gives me the absolute certainty of my faith, my trust in God, my belief.

That student really had little to live for because he had little more than himself to die for.  If we do not have something greater than ourselves to die for then we have little to live for than our own selfish interests.

What would you die for?   In Vietnam, I learned I would die for my country- the USA, if need be, I knew I could die resupplying 300 men in An Loc surrounded by 40,000 enemy soldiers.  In knowing Christ, I easily came to accept death, especially when helping others live.  When I was a teacher, I taught my students I would die for my students trying to protect them from an intruder/terrorist.  I had a good life, I taught them I would die trying to protect them that they could have come to have the same as I have.  I would die protecting them to allow them time to know our Lord and Savior, and never ever renounce Jesus as their Savior.

One Glorious man, a man we call Jesus had an extraordinary unselfish mission of selflessness, that mission was mankind's redemption.  God and Jesus made us, supplies our every need including showing us how to live and redeeming us, buying us back from the sins to which we sell ourselves.  Jesus could have evaded His death.  In the Garden of Gethsemane, He could have left through the back gate, He could have skipped town, He could have avoided the Will of God.  On the cross through His own power, He could have destroyed those heckling him, spoke the words and in a moment under His own power, He could have come down from the cross and set up an earthly power beyond anything known to mankind.

But, Jesus' redemptive mission, God's desire through Jesus was to show His love and Jesus' love for the people they created, so that, we would worship them in love and not out of fear of their earthly power.  This was the mission Jesus came for, that we would love Him, love God, and in faith submit to the life and teachings Jesus gave us.  This man we call Jesus, His mission, His life, His Teachings, AND OUR FAITH, our relationship with Him was/is validated, verified, sanctified, and made Holy by God The Almighty in the Cross, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Praise God, we worship a Risen Savior!

Where is your faith, your relationship with God?  Is it faith, a relationship that you would live and die for?  I certainly hope so!  Life is much more intense when you have something greater than yourself to live for but especial when you have something to die for (*1).

We have much to live for,  because Jesus had something to die for AND "Because He Lives" we do have so much more to die for.

Dying for a fellow soldier comes in times of war, but in those same times for me, I also found so much more to live for.  Faith became so much more real in the realization I could really die in trying to save others.

Epilogue

As for the movie and Eli, he completes his mission to the end.  As he felt, the mission was completed.  When he arrived at his destination, he knew the people he found were the people he was looking for.  But, upon arrival, the movie gives you a twist you will not believe..... and I will not tell you.  In faith you will have to trust me you will like the twist.  I will tell you this, the book..... it was the Bible.  All the people along the way that died trying to get "the book" just knew a power was in the words "written" there.

There is a wonderful twist in the final scenes I doubt you will will guess.

Giving up vs. Perseverance

Perseverance and
Giving up....  the Right Thing.

Luke 23:46 NKJ  And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, "Father, 'into Your hands I commit My spirit.' " Having said this, He breathed His last.

It is hard to imagine where we would be if Jesus had not given up!  He gave up all selfishness, all self-centeredness, and self desire to control His life.  He lived to please God in the face of all His concerns for His ministry, He gave up any self-will and lived in God's will.  This is counter to our desire to control our life.  We go beyond concern for our lives and far too often live in worry, when all we should do is give up the worry to God, seek His will for our lives, and allow the Holy Spirit to lead us in that Will.  Jesus is the perfect example of giving up personal will and doing the Father's will.

Here is a personal story on the beginning my journey of worry and giving up.

Too long ago when I was thirteen, I took a lifesaving course (water lifesaving) that would be three hours each night for thirteen consecutive weekdays.  I was the youngest, scrawniest one in the the group of about twenty amazon like teenagers.  Most of them were there to get their YMCA (Y) lifesaving course to be hunks at the beach.

I quit after the second night, or I tried.  Upon leaving school that third day, instead of walking to the Y, I started walking home.  Well, my daddy just happened by driving to town and picked me up.  He had a conversation about quitting..... while he was driving to the Y.  He ushered me out of the car and told me, “You go in there everyday until the instructor kicks you out.”

I did what my father said.  Eleven days later was graduation.  After graduation, one of the amazon swimmers came to me and said, “You know everyone in the class was pulling for you for we could see you struggle through the requirements, but we learned, pound for pound, you are the strongest swimmer in here.”  My dad taught me a life-long lesson in just five minutes and that amazonian encouragement stays with me even today.

The important lesson to see here is that in perseverance of a goal, I did give up.... the right thing.  I did not give up my task, but I gave up the worry of achieving the task.  I went back to class believing what my daddy said about staying until kicked out, and gave up the worry of achieving the goal but working harder.  It is most important to have a teachable heart even if it takes a kick in the pants to learn.

To this day, my perseverance continues, giving up right thing, and working hard to achieve the best life and God has to offer.  I seek to leave to God the worry for things I cannot control and “just keep on keeping on”.  All of us have to give up our worry at some point as we find ourselves in a wilderness, searching for and achieving our goals.  We must remain concerned and work to achieve our goals, but worry is just a heavy, useless distraction.  As we backslide on this worry issue, we have to remember how much better it is to return to God; we must ditch the worry, be concerned- yes, and in our concern, we do what we can do within His will to better our conditions, but leave the worry to God in submission to His will.

As Jesus did in the wilderness after his baptism, He was lead to the desert to determine His path and behaviors to conduct His Ministry.  He then pursued His goals relentlessly.  He knew His mission, but, in the face of all adversity He used His Resources Wisely.  He knew and used scripture to defend Himself against the evil one but He did give up... yes, he did give up the right thing, His Worry.  He had a plan- to do the Father's will, then He worked the plan, and let His Father take care of the consequences.

Jesus remained concerned about His mission but gave up His worry to God, knowing that He would complete His mission through God’s help.  He set the perfect example and we must do the same.  When we pray for God’s hold on our lives in the midst of our greatest concerns and distractions, we become even more authentic Christians and closer in the Spirit.  This allows God’s light to shine through us and be a beacon to those around us.  Just as Jesus did, in the worst of our adversities we must pray for God’s will in our lives... and give up the worry.

The scripture above shows us in Jesus’ last words from Luke were about giving up.  He held on to God for his last breath and then gave up His Spirit to God.  May we too do the same, hold on to God, KNOW Him and hand him our spirit in our last breath.

Choose your goals wisely and never give up to God the goal but leave the worry to God through seeking and living in His will.

There are consequences when we give our worry to God, an empty spot fills our thinking .  When we give up the worry, when we seek and live in His will, when we pray daily for God to live in us, the Holy Spirit rushes in.  Give up your worry, then allow Him and the closeness of the Holy Spirit rule your life and lead you to greater achievements in His name.

Thanks be to God,

He does have a plan for you (Jeremiah 29:11).  It will define your life.

Overlooked Evidence, Resurrection of Jesus

Overlooked Evidence of the
  Resurrection of Jesus The Christ

Matthew 28:6 NIV

He is not here
    he has risen,
         just as he said.
Come and see the place where he lay.

There is a great important writing that was never written and it is about and concerns the Truth of the Resurrection of Jesus The Christ!

I know that sounds strange and maybe is a conundrum, a confusing thought, but from the times of Jesus, what is not written about the Resurrection is Great Testimony to the facts!

Concerning the Resurrection, one would think in 33AD the Sanhedrin, the Temple leaders behind the crucifixion would have had their people making up stories and evidence, and working overtime writing, teaching, and preaching to the Jews, gentiles, and the world about how the Resurrection was a fake and a false event perpetrated by the disciples.  Even the temple leaders believed the soldiers guarding Jesus' tomb, paying them to lie about the resurrection (Matt 28:12). The interesting fact is that from the days of Jesus, there is not one sentence, not one iota, not one word, ever recorded outside of the Bible attempting to contradict the Resurrection of Jesus Christ!

The Greatest Event in History, the “Greatest Theological Earthquake” that ever shook the earth, the event that denotes the greatest change in our calendar, and there is absolutely nothing written by Jesus’ greatest enemies, powerful enemies that killed Him to stop the growing belief of His Resurrection!  There are a number of entries in secular books about the existence of Jesus and his disciples, but nothing, absolutely nothing written at the time and History of Jesus and the Jews that contradicts the Resurrection of Jesus The Christ!

In the baptism of Jesus,
God gave His approval of Jesus as His Son,
In Jesus' Resurrection,  God raising Jesus from the dead,
God gave us His stamp of approval,
His Holy and Unqualified Validation and Vindication,
His Glorification and Sanctification of Jesus
as the His (God's) Truth of, for, and on the life,
           teachings, behavior, and ministry of
            Jesus, His Son, The Christ.

This lack of secular evidence at the time of Jesus contrary of that written in the Bible is perhaps one of the great facts testifying to the absolute Truth of the event of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Anybody, Absolutely Anybody who reads this message has a personal decision to make, if you have not already accepted Jesus as your Savior.

That Decision is:
Do I accept Jesus the Christ as my personal Savior
or
do I deny God
and what He has done for mankind?
It is not just a decision of your present life,
it is a decision that controls your eternity.

That is the Question, your behavior is your answer.
Saying, "I believe" and go one with your life
as you have been probably lived may not help you.
It is what you do with your life in living humble submission to that belief that is your honest answer answer to God.

Jesus spent over 30 years in preparation for the day He would begin His ministry.  Thirty years to think about the most important words and message He could present to tell us what to do to make our life Right with God.  This is the most important message Jesus had for mankind, he began His ministry telling mankind what must be done for an individual to come into God's Kingdom in the here and now.  It is in plain words, straight forward, clear beyond misunderstanding, without need of degrees to understand, do, and accomplish.

His first command verified by His Resurrection,

the first words he uttered in His earthly ministry,
the most important message he came to tell us, and
the primary message Jesus died for
that we will live an eternal life,
The message concerns what we need to do
to begin a life that will save us from our selfish selves and
in the desires of a all-knowing and loving God.
God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit knew what is best for us,

Jesus: The Master of Obedience

Jesus:                                                                                                     Return to Main Menu
   The Master of Obedience

This writing is a bit longer than most and is written in two parts to provide a break in the reading.  Both parts are in this document rather than two documents as I have done in other of my longer writings.

There is something about the word 'obedience' we do not like, yet, down deep in our innermost soul we know the behavior represented by that word is good for us.

A Young Man Learns Obedience, the hard way.
A young man in my middle school classroom went to the bathroom everyday for the first five days of class understanding my rule about having only five bathroom visits during my class for the whole semester.  Beginning on the third day I reminded Steven that he better manage his bathroom visits or he would not like the way I would manage them.  On the fifth day I told him there would be no more bathroom visits during my class unless he brought a doctor's note indicating he had a medical problem requiring unlimited visits.  The next day, he brought a note from his mother indicating she had given him permission to leave my room anytime he wanted to for a bathroom visit and could disregard my instructions to the contrary.  Containing my laughter, I smiled and asked him, "Is your mother a medical doctor?" and  "No," was his answer.  "Well you cannot go to the bathroom, and if you do so without my permission, I will send you to the control room."  It was amazing to see the power of my few words; he never again had to go to the bathroom.  But in reality, Steven just decided to be obedient to avoid punishment.

The fullness of being obedient was something I learned at home.  And, it became far more than selfishly following directions to avoid punishment.  Now, in my early years, my daddy or mother on rare occasions took a paddle or a switch to me (a small freshly pulled pliable tree limb devoid of leaves), but I do not think I learned real obedience from that. Of course,  as a young child, I did not like the punishment of a spanking and especially not the switching (mother's favorite).  But, as I grew, I came to realize I disliked my inner feeling of failing my father when he had spanked me more so than the spanking as punishment.  As time passed, the bad feeling I felt was my understanding of failure to love my mother and dad enough to do what they asked.   What I came to understand is what they asked of me was good for my overall good and well being.  As children we have to learn to follow directions for our own good, for as adults, in many cases, we do the same, for our own good; in both cases, to avoid punishment.  But, with mother and dad, the desire to follow their directions (their will) came because of their love for me, not in fear of what they might do to me.   I came to truly understand "Father Knows Best".  It is the same with our love for God!   I really came to more fully understand all of this in becoming a parent.

Our Selfishness in Our Obedience

As a parent, when my son was maturing, I wanted him to follow my will for him because he loved me, not because of any punishment that may come from me (*1).  It is the same with God.

Most people understand the importance of being obedient, at least when they know the ramifications and desiring to avoid the bad consequences.  But, in our maturity we come to realize that being obedient more often brings good consequences for us and we become obedient for the positive rewards we receive.  If we follow a supervisor's directions at our work, usually we advance in our job, that is a positive reward, but the behavior has a selfish component in it.  Further, if we take the initiative, and see what needs to be done and do it, we usually are rewarded and recognized for what we have done.  With that comes not only the good feeling of getting the job done but sometimes many other rewards come such as respect of people around you.  But, some of this still contains selfishness and from that, pride too easily slips into our behavior.  The element of "what's in it for me?" attitude can still reside in our behavior.

========================================
Part 2: What Jesus teaches us in His Example
================================

Now, do you think selfishness is why Jesus was obedient, even unto death?  I hope not!

Jesus was the Master of Obedience, and it was not for selfish reasons.

Real Godly obedience in following God's will in our behavior and our thinking comes from our maturing love for God, and that comes from our Trusting God.   This is the example of Jesus, the Perfect Leader.  In John 4:24 (see below in context) Jesus says, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work."  This means that for Jesus, His very essence, His very basis for living, His fundamental reason to exist was to do the Will of God!   Because God loves us and He know what is best for us, we should want the same!  This is what Jesus desired for his life and doing the Will of God is what Jesus desires for our life!  He is our Perfect Example.  However, for Jesus, Obedience came at an extreme cost, and He understood His cost long before the payment was made, yet He remained and persevered in being obedient!

Obedience
      Without the Threat of Punishment

Perhaps the most amazing behavior of Jesus is His Obedience and in His obedience He persevered in His Self-Control (*2).  Imagine the Self-Control as He had to live with the human limitations of choice and at the same time limit His use of His power to affect, change, and directly control anything earthly He desired.  In His Self-Control, He chose to be Obedient to what God sent Him to earth to do- Set the Example to us on how to live, and be the Perfect Sacrifice for us to live in Grace, despite our sin!  In that Obedience He chose to never once, not one time to ever use His power to selfishly affect himself.  He never used his power to get Himself out of situations dangerous to Himself.  Jesus never used His power for any self gratification or self advancement.  Imagine the power to change anything He wanted and never used it for Himself.  He was always sacrificially living in God's will for His life void of any and all selfishness, even when others presented Him great temptations.  It is no wonder He prayed often.

To achieve His Father's goals for His life He depended on His relationship with God and the gained strength He found therein.  To keep and develop the obedient relationship with His Father, He prayed often and without distractions in being alone.  In His desires came the Loving Obedience to do God's Will, He wanted to complete the mission God had for Him, and to do this, in His love of and for God He continued His prayers through His close personal relationship with His Father.

Learning to Love God

We live daily but survive eternally because of God.  God gives us the air to breathe, grows our food, causes the rain to replenish our water supply, the earth to revolve and rotate giving us seasons; all this supplying our needs and then adds to our basic needs His Saving Grace through Jesus Christ.   My parents saw to my needs in my early years, taught me how to live, and taught me how to have Righteous goals in life.  In these gifts of my parents I learned to obey first because of the fear of punishment, then love them because they loved me, and finally to be obedient because I loved them.  Even after leaving home, I desired to have a personal relationship with them, just as Jesus did with His heavenly Father.  I learned to live in part, not to disappoint my parents following the example of Jesus in living not to disappoint His Father.

In the same manner we should learn to love God.  In the beginning we may fear God, and that is not a bad thing, but when we see God for the ultimate provider He really is, we come to love Him just as Jesus did!  Our love for God builds because of a developed personal relationship with Him; and just as with Jesus, it takes communication through our prayers to achieve that relationship and in that relationship we come to be obedient to Him BECAUSE we love HIM.  We love God Not because of any threats, we love both God and Jesus because of what they did and do for us, out of their love for us!  In that, we should desire and seek to be obedient.

In Jesus Christ, we have the Perfect Example of obedience.  We will never be perfect in our Obedience, but with a prayerful relationship with Jesus and God we can have the same desire as Jesus, the desire to love God, the desire for a personal relationship with God, and the great desire to be obedient to Him in that loving relationship.  Through that relationship of love, our repentance and His forgiveness, we then have eternal life with God, beginning now.

As we seek God for our lives, we do learn out of our love for Him, "Father Really Does Know Best".

Thanks be to God.

John 4:
29"Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ ?"30They came out of the town and made their way toward him.31Meanwhile his disciples urged him, "Rabbi, eat something."32But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about."33Then his disciples said to each other, "Could someone have brought him food?"34"My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.35Do you not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.36Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.37Thus the saying 'One sows and another reaps' is true.38I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor."
