Luke 17:2 NKJ   It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.

Matthew 16:23 NIV

Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."

As a professional teacher, we are taught to encourage students to do their best.  It is encouraging to encourage because we often to see the results of encouragement.  I guess one could call teachers, professional encourages.

One time some years ago, a student was tardy two days in a row, came moping into class, and just not her usual happy self.  I had seen the poor work from her, a disrespect to me, and a “woe is me face” for several days.  I should have inquired earlier but teachers see this often.  But, tardies are unacceptable.  As she was in the the class for the last period of the day, on her second tardy day I asked her to stay back because we need to talk about her tardies.

At first she did not want to say much, but finally as she started crying, something I hate, she told me her boyfriend had dumped her.  For this young seventh grader, this was the end of the world.   All I could do is have compassion for her.  Oh, I knew this would pass, but for the moment she felt like the end of her world was upon her.   I had known the same many decades before.  It was all a matter of simply encouraging her.

I sat there and began to encouraged her.  I began by talking about a girl that dumped me in high school, and how I got over it.  I softly told her many things, but encouraged her to use this as a stepping stone to understanding how love in her life will come and fade, but one day will stick.  I explained this will not be the last time this may happen, but learn from it.  We even talked about the only Love in her life that would never leave her.  As we talked, her tears disappeared, and she was feeling much better when she left.... with a pass to class.

She was never late again to class

How many times are we given the chance to be encouragers to the people around us, but fail to do so.  Especially, with the people we love.  How many times do you hear stories of gossip than stories of encouragement,  especially at church.   How often do we talk down about someone or their project of trying to do something new at church.  Their project might not fit with our interest but the least we can do is encourage them.  Jesus, with Peter, made it quite clear that it is sinful to be discouraging or hinder someone in their quest to do the will of God.

Jesus was an encourager and cautioned us to not be discouragers and stumbling blocks.  He encouraged His disciples to spread His message and He does the same for us.  After his death and most importantly, His Resurrection, he gave His disciples the Master Encourager, the Holy Spirit.  In our acceptance of Christ as our Lord and Savior, He likewise gives us the same.  The Holy Spirit gives you the courage to be Master Encourager in His Name.  Through Christ and the Holy Spirit, be an encourager.   Go into all the world and bring people to Christ, start in your community being a Masterful Encourager. Do God’s work, be an Encourager, I guarantee it will enrich your life.

To have the Holy Spirit in your heart, To have the "Master Encourager" in your heart, pray, and pray, and pray, everyday.  This will truly change your heart.

Thanks Be to God
