 Matthew 10:32 NRS     "Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven;

The Rich Young Man

Matthew 19:16-29pp -- Mk 10:17-30; Lk 18:18-30

16 Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?"

17"Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments."
18  "Which ones?" the man inquired. Jesus replied, " 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony,
19  honor your father and mother,' and 'love your neighbor as yourself.' "
20 "All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?"
21Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
22When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
23Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven."

As a teacher, my first principal in a discussion with the new teachers about grading explained that we have to raise the standards of what the students expect of themselves.  She said, “As in ourselves, we must teach our students that ‘good is not good enough’”.  Personally, that has been a part of my life since days as a Boy Scout and especially since college.  In combat air drops in Vietnam,  “‘good’ was not good enough” for the people on the ground receiving much requiring much needed supplies;  I had to be on target, on the mark.  In a three month siege of An Loc, S. Vietnam by the North, if our supplies were off target  (in enemy territory), fighter jets had to fly in and destroy the bundles.  Clearly, “Good was not good enough”.

Some people have the opinion, “I really do not need to go to church very often, I am a good person.”  The concern with this attitude is that people may one day be on shaky ground.  Our definition of ‘good’ likely falls short of God’s expectations.  God and Jesus wants to know us in a personal relationship and the Holy Spirit wants to guide us through this life; guides we Trust requires a Relationship.  Just as we communicate with friends for building a personal relationship,  God and Jesus needs the same from us; the Holy Spirit knows and guides us through our communication.  The communications for these relationships is through prayer and seeking to know God not just know about God. This communications also involves talking, listening, and learning, Bible study and acknowledging your faith to others.  This is best accomplished through Christian church fellowship; Christian fellowship helps build our faith.  Then, we can best acknowledge Jesus to others both inside and outside of our church.

God wants us to understand His expectations in our lives, and being our good is not good enough.  We must continually try to be on target with our Godly Relationships.  To miss this mark may mean we land in enemy territory.  Clearly, therefore, being “Good is not good enough.”

Thanks Be to God
