The Sinfulness of Worry

The Sinfulness of Worry

We often forget the commands of Jesus in our everyday lives.  In doing so, we often create barriers to our relationship with God.  Any barrier we create that separates us from God is the very essence of sin.

 Worry can be the worst.

Consider:       Worry and Anxiety Bible Verses
·        Matthew 6:25 NIV
[Do Not Worry] [6:25-33pp -- Lk 12:22-31] "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?"

·        Matthew 6:28 NIV
"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin."

·        Matthew 6:31 NIV
"So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'"

"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

It is clear that Jesus was concerned about His people being too involved in the tragedy of 'worry'.    The very real tragedy of worry is that in the depths of our worry we builds barriers between us and others, and worse, between us and God.  Any barrier we put up to our Personal Relationship with God is our sinfulness.

Being concerned about any life event is ok.  In our concern we pray about it, we talk about our concerns, we seek answers to our concerns, and we do something about them.  That concern is not sinfulness, and neither is it worry.  In loving others, being concerned for others especially our close loved ones, God expects us to (1)-be concerned, (2)-seek to do all we can do, and (3)- What we cannot do, give it up to Him.

Worry is a different story.

Far too often our concern slips into our excessive worry when we find ourselves at a point where we have done the praying, talked the talking, sought the answers, and tried to do all we can do about a concern.  Worry and especially excessive worry comes because the problem/concern continues to grow in spite of our best efforts.  In allowing the concern to slip into excessive worry, our real problem grows bigger than ever.  After we have done all we can do, it is when we can no longer do anything else about a concern that we begin to worry.  The worry Jesus is talking about are those activities in which we no longer have any control and there is nothing more we can do.  But in our minds we continue to battle the concern fruitlessly, with no meaningful end, and worry overtakes our thinking, good judgment, and general behavior.

This point in some activities where we no longer have control and can do nothing about a situation and higher, more intense concern is not fruitful, then  it is time we have to give up, let go, and let God.  It is when we do not give up to God what we cannot control that we begin the rapid creep into a sinful situation of excessive worry.  Sin gains control when we keep trying (worrying) to solve our problems and cannot do anything about them; we are spinning our wheels and nothing we do changes things, we are getting nowhere, and we worry, we fight, we worry, and excessively worry thinking nothing about God and His solutions for us.

Suppose your child is very sick in the hospital.  We pray, we depend on and pray for doctors to find a cure, we get a bed in the child's room to be near, and we stay focused on what we can do to help the child get better.  This is ok until we become distraught with worry.  Maybe we begin to fuss at the doctors or to weep continuously; perhaps we blame God for not making the child better, or worse- we ask or wonder why it is His will for this child to be so deathly sick?  There are many symptoms of behaviors that begin to show we no longer depend on God.   These unforgiving behaviors are just some of the elements of not allowing our faith and trust in God to take over and give us peace.  Being at peace does not mean we are no longer concerned.  We can be at peace which brings greater clearness of mind to be concerned and continue to try and make sure everything humanly possible is being done.  But, at some point in many problems we must give up our worry to God and seek His Peace in our heart.  Being overly concerned beyond what we can possibly do leads us to worry and then excessive worry.  Again, worry, especially excessive worry, drives us away from depending on and trusting God, and in that behavior, when we push God out of the solution equation.  In this behavior, we most surely sin.

When we worry and worry and excessively worry we are essentially shutting out God as the central element in living our life.  In our worry and especially our excessive worry we are essentially saying, "I do not need you God to help me solve problems in my life."  That is the foundation of sinful behavior that separates us from our Personal Relationship with Him.

As with all commands of Jesus, they are good for us and our health.  Jesus tells us not to worry and His Word is Truth for our lives.  If we break His commands to us then we sin.  We can be concerned, we should do all we can possibly do, but then we must depend on and trust God;  But worry? no!

In worrisome times, forget the worry but keep the concern doing all you can do holding on to Trusting God and living in His Grace.  In giving up worry we allow our minds to focus more on the Glory of God and what He can do to bring Joy to all our circumstances, even circumstances of grave concern. In that Joy we are more clear minded to help insure all is done to solve problems.   St. Paul tells us to be thankful in all circumstances.  Just as there is great Wisdom when Jesus said to not worry, so to is Paul's wisdom on being thankful*.

We must continuously focus and avoid building our barriers to our Personal Relationship with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. We do this by

Our prayers, Bible Study, and Worship,
  Loving God and Loving Jesus
     Trusting God and Trusting Jesus,
Praying for God's Spiritual Guidance, and
          Feeling the Joy and Peace
            that surpasses all understanding
               in all our circumstances.

Thanks be to God.

Trust Jesus, Trust God

Trust Jesus, Trust God

One of the Great Commands of Jesus comes from John 14:1.

This command comes from Jesus in his final discussions with the disciples before His arrest.  He knew their needs and the hard times ahead as He had faced and would still face.  He knew what it meant to Trust God and the Glory in doing so.

As the Great Leader Jesus was and is, He gave words of encouragement to help them through the tough times.  They apply to us today as much as to the disciples He loved.  What we find is our own experience in Trusting God just proves what Jesus taught.

But more important, on Jesus' Resurrection by God on the third day, God Verified, Sanctified, and Glorified everything Jesus said and did.  Jesus trusted God!  As we trust God more, the more we will desire to Trust God.  That is simply the way it works because God made it that way.  Often our circumstances will not change, but as we Trust God, the more we experience the results of that Trust and then we desire to Trust God more.

The Bible is full of men and women that trusted God.  Noah, Abraham, Moses, Joshua, David, Solomon, Ruth, Mary, Joseph, the disciples, Paul, and the list goes on.

As we Trust God, Trust Jesus, and Trust the movement of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we grow in our Spiritual Maturity, some say we grow in faith.  But, our proven experience is- as we Trust God, we Trust Him more.  As we pray, in our patience we have answers to our needs and we Trust Him more.

God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit blesses us in so many ways.  How can we not Trust, how can we not feel God and Jesus in our lives, how can we not feel the Holy Spirit moving us to be greater than we are.

Trust God, Trust Jesus, Trust the Holy Spirit
These words have been moving people for nearly 2000 years, I hope they move you.  Trust- It will change your life.

Thanks be to God.

Great Commands of Jesus, "Do Not Be Afraid"

Great Commands of the Bible,
"Do not be Afraid"

There are many words of Command in the Bible,

Commands from God,

Commands from Jesus,

 Commands of the Disciples,

and the Commands of Paul.

The Command of  "Do Not be afraid."

God's Covenant With Abram

1After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward."
At night, a child goes to mother, "I am afraid, can I stay with you?" Someone loses a job and wonders how they will survive; or a young lieutenant navigator arrives in Saigon, S-Vietnam petrified, scared of dying, and filled in fear knowing that the next day's battle is most dangerous.  From the earliest times in the Bible, from Abram (Abraham), Moses, Joshua, to the disciples, they were often afraid.
Just as with those mentioned, we all can have one emotion in common, that emotion is FEAR.  For good reasons, we are born with it.  Medical science explains that fear forms in the amygdale, an almond-shaped mass of gray matter of the brain and scientist have found a gene that produces a protein, 'stathmin' that is a stimulant of fear and anxiety.  Fear and being afraid is good for us as it heightens our awareness of our surroundings but how we learn to deal with it determines our success in our surviving life.  We learn to control our response or in our panic, we can become useless, or worse, dead.  The fearful circumstances will remain, but the panic of being afraid does not have to control us.  Learning to shed panic in times of our senses hightened by natural fear is a learned response.  In learning to shed panic, we learn to actively respond without being afraid.  In our God-given Faith, we learn to shed panic more quickly and to respond quickly and our response then is to His Glory.
Millions of words have been written about dealing with our common enemy- fear and being afraid.   Jesus had a few words that can help us, probably more than most of the millions by mankind.
Jesus in one word had two important commands that help control our panic, lighten our fear, and ideally eliminate all of it.  Two words that are the enemy of our faith in God.
In facing fear, faith is the foundation of our response.  Either we have clear minded courage and respond in Godly Faith OR we depend on ourselves, our government or what ever, AND in doing so, shrink, become dependent, withdraw, run in our fears, live in mistrust, sink into anxiety, develop cowardice in our behaviors, and-or follow evil ways of trying to survive.  Without God, we are in rebellion against God.  In choosing a Godly Faith through Jesus Christ,     Living in Faith is our Righteous Relationship with God.

We live and can do no better than Trusting God with our lives.  It began with Abraham.
Beginning with Abraham (Abram) in Old Testament (OT) God admonished His chosen leaders "do not be afraid."  It began with Abraham when he was fearful of not delivering a baby to God through his wife.  In Genesis 15:

God's Covenant With Abram

1After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward."2But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?"3And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir."4Then the word of the LORD came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir."5He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars--if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."6Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
135 times in the Old Testament, God communicates with the Hebrews/Israel 135 times either directly or through His prophets, "Do not be afraid".  In all this for the Hebrews, living life is not as much about a relationship with God as it is about following the law and living in the covenant brought through Abraham and his descendants.
With the arrival of Jesus, everything changes.  "Afraid" is replaced with faith, believe, and trust.  Jesus is the fulfillment of the law and brings love to replace the law of the OT (Matthew 22:34-40).  Where as faith and believe is mentioned only 35 times in the Old Testament, it is the focus and theme of the New Testament (NT).  In the NT, the word faith is mentioned 242 times.  In that translated word 'faith' from the Greek 'pistus', we have additional words from 'pistus'- believe and trust.  Where the OT mentions 'believe' only 20 times, the NT has the word 130 times.   In total, the Greek word 'pistus' (*1) translated as faith, believe, trust is mentioned in the NT 401 times.  This 'pistus', this 'faith', 'believe', and 'trust' becomes and is our Personal Relationship with God!  Jesus not only taught it, He commanded it!  With one verb, He gave us two eternal commands:

Jesus brings that change, a new promise, the New Covenant with God:  it is no longer about adherance to the law but about a Relationship, The Personal Relationship with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit!  With Jesus, He gives us peace freeing our hearts not to be afraid.  Jesus, He truly changes our lives.
As the fear we feel in a situation will heighten our senses to danger it is good, but because of Jesus, we do not need to be afraid or constantly live in irrational fear of anything.   Because of Jesus, our relationship with God, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit we can, with a clear mind and an untroubled heart better deal with the fear and CEASE being afraid.
Jesus taught and died to bring us 'pistus'- 'faith', 'believe', 'trust'.                   Faith- is God's Divine persuasion to                 Trust & Believe as Jesus' commands and teaches us.
In Jesus' Resurrection,    God verified the Truth of Jesus' Words.Words that bring us Faith.
To repeat Jesus- "I tell you the truth":          God loves us, Jesus Proves it, the Holy Spirit teaches us,              and there is nothing you can do about it.

Thanks be to God

Epilog-

My dealing with fear and living in fear began nearly 10 years before June 3, 1973.  That battle was won in an instant, 15 minutes after midnight.

On June 3, 1973 I arrived in Saigon for my first flying mission with my self-confidence totally washed away.  In getting to my room dead tired and full of fear I just collapsed on my bunk.  Praying was strange to me as a 24 year old young man.  But, my fear was overwhelming as I prayed.  In that blacked out, dark secluded room in Saigon, S. Vietnam, I humbly and in submission ended my prayer "not my will but thine be done".  In that very instant of humility and giving up myself to His will as I prayed "... thine be done" God's everyday work, what we call a miracle, saved me from myself and my fear.  My circumstances did not change but the strength to walk through the storm I faced suddenly laid me into a deep restful sleep.

Click this link for the details on why I am so sorry I fell asleep:

Great Commands of the Bible, Love

The Great Commands, Love

Prologue
There are many words of Command in the Bible,
                                               Commands from God,
                                                     Commands from Jesus,
Commands of the Disciples, and the
                                                                 Commands of Paul.

This is the first of many "Great Commands" postings to be published from time to time.
I begin with the Greatest Command.

Matthew 22:34-40

 -- Mk 12:28-31

34Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together.35One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:36"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"37Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'38This is the first and greatest commandment.39And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

Among the many things Jesus did, He was a master of using few words to bring His opponents to a sad end with their questions.
In this series of the Commands of Jesus we will see carefully worded theology that Jesus gave in His time that will last for all times to the end of time.  The truth of which we cannot question.
Words that create a newness in God.  Where the relationship with God was the Law, now Jesus' words define a New Personal Relationship God wants with His believers.

Jesus, He was and is the Master of the Word.

In reading this passage, it is good to remember that Jesus is in His last week of life and He knows it.  The Sadducees and Pharisees are distressed at the popularity of Jesus and are trying to trick Jesus into saying something that would allow them to arrest Him for blasphemy.

The Sadducees and Pharisees had been put to shame in asking questions about paying taxes to Caesar and a question about the resurrection, to which the Sadducees did not believe in.  In both cases, the Sadducees and Pharisees were made to look like fools and had withdrawn from the verbal sword fight with Jesus, a most patient Jesus.  Now, the Pharisees are seen trying to trick Him one more time, so they send in a lawyer, "an expert in the law".

For the Pharisees and the Temple Rulers, 'the Law' found in the Old Testament gave these people ruling predominance in power and position over the Jews of the day.  However, here in quick order, Jesus reduces the role of the Pharisees and Sadducees to the sidelines of history.  Jesus says the people's trust and faith  in God has nothing to do with all the little laws the Pharisees diligently followed and taught for over 500 years. With this pronouncement of 'Love', Jesus removed the Sadducees from the equation of setting requirements of Temple worship in the Godly relationship of the day.  It just made the Pharisees and Sadducees more upset with Jesus because He became more influential with the people.  Something the Pharisees and Sudducees could not allow to continue and felt they must stop, or so they thought.

In the power of His words as He had done so many times before,       Jesus' Words were again changing the

                theology of the ages.
Words the with new meaning, astonishing, and amazing.

Words from Jesus giving totally new and astonishing
                 meaning to our
our relationship with God.

Words destroying the work of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Words silencing the "expert in the law" that through
Jesus,  "the law" summed up in one word, "Love".

Words redefining the Mosaic law Jews lived by.

Words, not to be questioned because
the Words were verified by God
in raising Jesus from His death.

The Words of Jesus are not the best way to achieve our Close Personal Relationship with God, as "best" implies there are other ways.

Make no mistake,
because the words come from Jesus and because
they were verified by God,  we can be most assured
they are the only way to our Personal Relationship with God.

"Love God, Love Others."

Thanks be to God.
